Australian Shepherds
Do you know the breed?
If not read this, if you do maybe a refresher is in order before you purchase an Australian Shepherd, from us or anyone. We want you to be prepared, do your research!
Aussies are one of the fastest growing breeds in terms of popularity right now. They are loyal and fiercely love their people. This means they may be more reserved towards those they don't know. Socializing once they have completed their puppy vaccinations is encouraged. These dogs are true velcro dogs. They love to go with you and would even be a lap dog if you would let them! They are generally good natured dogs and do well with children. If you buy one from us they have already been exposed and handled daily by kids. Our pups are also exposed to a variety of farm animals.
Aussies can excel in the show ring, be good therapy dogs, just be pets, and work livestock. Aussies are extremely smart, sometimes too smart. If they don't keep their minds busy they will find a way to stay busy. This isn't necessarily a good thing. They can start chewing on things, digging, and exploring. They need active families. While we don't feel these dogs are best suited for apartment life, it's not impossible. They need an active family, room to run, and mental stimulation. If you think you can provide this then maybe an Aussie is for you.
Colors
Aussies main colors are black, red, blue merle and red merle. Within those there can be variations of colors. You can have black and red tri's (black or red, white, and tan points), black and red bi's (black or red and either white or with tan points), blue and red merles (coat pattern can be harlequin or tweed). Blue and red merles can also be self merles. Blue eyes can occur in any color, but mostly in merles. If a black or red tri/bi have bet genes they can produce blue eyes as well, though not as often in these colors. One thing that you will never see here at Wagon Wheel Aussies is double merles. We do not condone or breed two merles together. I am sure i forgot some variations of colors!
